چکیده
UNLABELLED The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of thermal laser photocoagulation (TLP) to that of photodynamic therapy (PDT) for the treatment of recurrent choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). PATIENTS AND METHODS We prospectively studied 38 patients (40 eyes) with AMD presented with recurrent CNV after TLP. The study eyes were assigned to one of the two groups according to their treatment (repetition of TLP or PDT). PDT was performed according to the standard protocol. The follow-up time ranged from 9 months to 9 years. RESULTS The mean best-corrected visual acuity (VA) was statistically significantly lower compared to that of the baseline in both groups of the study. There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups with regard to the stabilization, improvement or decline of the best-corrected VA. CONCLUSION According to our results TLP and PDT are equally ineffective for the treatment of recurrent CNV in patients with AMD.

BACKGROUND The neovascular form of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) can rapidly lead to severe loss of central vision and adversely affect the patient's quality of life. During the 1990s the only proven treatment for neovascular AMD was laser photocoagulation. Only a minority of patients are eligible to receive this treatment, however, and the treatment itself can cause acute retinal dama...

Purpose: To review and discuss the available treatments for choroidal neovascularization (CNV) due to age-related macular degeneration (AMD) emphasizing to photodynamic therapy (PDT). Methods: Published papers from 1974 until 1999 related to AMD, its available treatments and PDT were reviewed. Results: The most used effective treatment for CNV is laser photocoagulation which does not have a maj...

Choroidal neovascularization secondary to agerelated macular degeneration or pathologic myopia can cause severe loss of central vision and lead to legal blindness. For many years thermal photocoagulation has been the preferred treatment for this disease, but it is only suitable for a small number of patients and may cause additional immediate visual loss after treatment. Photodynamic therapy (P...
